Hans Melis created the statues of John Cabot, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, and bust statues of politicians and the founders of Memorial University. The statue of Italian explorer John Cabot, commemorating his landfall at Cape Bonavista in 1497, was unveiled in 1971. However, the claim of Cabot’s landing in Bonavista remains debatable among scholars.
