One of Newfoundland's most celebrated authors, the late Al Pittman, is remembered on a bronze memorial plaque designed by his long-time friend, visual artist Gerald Squires, to pay tribute to Pittman’s literary legacy. The plaque is installed on an eight-foot-tall boulder and is located in a small park in the city centre, a place where Pittman frequented.

At the unveiling of the memorial, Squires told CBC, "I did Al the way I wanted to do him...I designed the whole thing, I chose the poetry, poetry that meant something to me personally." The commemorative plaque also contains a relief profile of Pittman. Public art can stimulate learning, and Squires hoped that people might learn something about Pittman and his work when they visit the memorial.
