Water, landmass and codfish are the elements that symbolize the historical connection between St. John’s and Portugal. “The columns are reminiscent of the two landmasses on both sides of the Atlantic…Water is streaming up and down the columns,” and the space between the two columns in the shape of a codfish is “reflective of the common traditions the two maritime cultures share and is representative of the historical relationship between Newfoundland and Portugal.” (Luben Boykov)
