Corporal Thomas A. Pittman, 26, of Little Bay East in Fortune Bay was stationed in England when he posed for Basil Gotto for a commissioned statue of a fighting soldier, holding a rifle in one hand and a grenade in the other. The original was said to have been purchased by a member of the Bowring family in England.
Sir Edgar Bowring, a prominent businessman and politician in St. John’s, donated a replica of the statue to the city park in 1922 as a memorial to the Newfoundland Regiment soldiers who fought in WW1.
Artist bio
Basil Gotto was born in 1866 in Highgate, London, England. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and the Académie Julien in Paris. He was a war correspondent for the Daily Express during the war in South Africa, and served in the First World War. He is known for his paintings as well as sculptures.
