An imposing larger-than-life-size statue of the Portuguese navigator Gasper Corte-Real stands on a pedestal facing across the Confederation Building. It was donated by the Portuguese Fisheries Organization to recognize the hospitality of Newfoundlanders towards Portuguese Grand Banks fishermen.

Corte-Real reached Terra Nova (New Land) in 1501 with three ships, but he and his crew were lost at sea while the other two ships returned to Portugal.
