For the LAWN (League of Artists of Western Newfoundland) Barrow Project in the summer of 2020, artist Jane Reagh’s design comprised a painted repurposed wheelbarrow and a permanent portrait mural highlighting community characters and their pets. The portrait mural is located on the inside of the hairpin turn on Broadway across from Sobeys. It is painted on 2 concrete foundation walls which back a small city park with a bench.

Reagh said, “Every portrait was modelled for and painted on-site, and every portrait has a story,” noting that “people came, they dressed the way they wanted to dress, and they did what they wanted to do, and they represented who they wanted to represent.”

Reagh’s mural was one of four projects that received funding from the City of Corner Brook through the LAWN Community Project.

Artist bio

Jane Reagh studied art at NSCAD in Halifax and Parsons School of Design in NYC. She has lived in Corner Brook since 2013, painting the landscape and the people. Reagh has been involved with a number of public art projects around Corner Brook, most recently the Barrow mural on Broadway. This project showcases local community members, both people and companion animals. Every portrait was modelled for and painted on site and every portrait has a story. Here is one: Nanny and her two little dogs walked on nearby Country Road for ten years. Although she now has dementia and has moved to the Bungalows, her daughter wanted her painted on a bench with her dogs, Sarah and Lily, sitting up happily beside her.
