The statues of a Newfoundland dog and a Labrador Retriever are the main features at Harbourside Park, which was built to commemorate the 1583 proclamation by Sir Humphrey Gilbert claiming Newfoundland for England. Visitors can learn about the dogs from the information panels and read storyboards providing the history of the city. The two dogs are placed so that they are looking out to the harbour. They are slightly bigger than life-size. People pet them, kids climb up and ride them - interactions that the artist envisioned.
