Located at the Derm Flynn Riverfront Peace Park, a seven-metre-long steel fragment from the World Trade Center towers wreckage is part of a memorial to honour the victims of 9/11. A gift from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Appleton 9/11 Memorial is one of the 9/11 memorials erected from the World Trade Center fragments.

The 9/11 attacks forced 38 planes, their crews and more than 6,500 passengers to land in Gander. Being only 18 km from Gander, Appleton was one of the communities in Central Newfoundland that hosted diverted passengers in the days following 9/11. To show their gratitude to the community, the passengers made donations to the town. The community used the funds to create the park, which also includes a memorial plaque. The town has continued to hold memorial services every year since the attacks.
