In 2017, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Great Fire of 1892, the City of St. John’s issued a Request for Proposals for a mural on the retaining wall (replacing the previous aging mural) at McBride's Hill, a short street connecting Duckworth Street and Water Street. The design submitted by St. John’s-based artist Julie Lewis of SassyTuna Studio was chosen for the project. Watch the video of Lewis’s design method for the 21-metre-long mural.
The Great Fire of 1892 destroyed two-thirds of the city within just a few hours after it started at the top of Carter’s Hill, on the north side of the St. John’s harbour. You can follow the link to read more about it.
