Historically, Newfoundland’s outport women worked in the fishery, salting and drying fish while tending to other household chores and raising families.

When answering a call to submit a work for “something nautical” for the Cabot 500 celebrations, artist Jim Maunder knew what he would create. He said the artwork was inspired by “a story about someone’s grandmother, years ago, having been on the beach in the morning making fish (drying fish), going home at lunchtime, giving birth, and then returning to the beach to make fish in the afternoon.” (SJCC)
