Harbour Front, L'Anse aux Meadows
Norwegian-born American singer, performer and sculptor August Werner (1893-1980) created a 16-foot-tall statue of Leif Erikson, the first recorded European to arrive in North America, for the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. The statue is located at Shilshole Marina in Ballard, Seattle. Three 10-foot replicas of Werner's original Leif Erikson statue design were subsequently cast in bronze and installed in Trondheim (Norway), Brattahlid (Greenland) and L'Anse aux Meadows (Newfoundland and Labrador).
The replica of Werner's Norse explorer Leif Erikson statue is located on the wharf harbour front, 2 km from the L'Anse aux Meadows Historic Site. It was donated by the Leif Erikson International Foundation to the people of L'Anse aux Meadows, and unveiled in 2013.
Artist bio
August Werner was born in Bergen, Norway in 1893. He studied at the College of Agricultre in Stend, Norway, and the Masters School of Music in New York. He was a professional singer, performing as an invited soloist with orchestra, churches, and choirs, as well as painting Norwegian landscapes. Werner was decorated by the King of Norway with the Order of St. Olav and as a Knight of St. Olav by the King of Sweden.
